This morning I heard an NPR piece on Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. Listening to the first movement somehow consoled me. It served as a reminder that spring is not the gentle season of pastels, flowers and forgiving breezes of which I feel we are being deprived. It is a violent, rough and unexpected time of explosion, production and destruction. Yes. We here in New Hampshire are definitely experiencing a Stravinsky kind of spring. Nothing Copland about it.
We took our second Moonlight March tonight. This time into the woods behind our house. No flashlights necessary. Despite Jasper's very convincing calls, we did not manage to coax an owl out of the shadows. Tomorrow, to the sugar shack. The sap is running.
