Today is the first day of Advent, so Jasper opened the first pocket on his Advent calendar. He got a small chocolate santa and a piece of jasper for his string necklace. He is a bit overwhelmed by the spirit of "getting" that comes with this season. What? You mean this guy in a red suit with a white beard is going to show up one morning and give me a ton of toys? Sweet! (a new favorite word) I keep asking him "What do you want for Christmas?" At first he said a Christmas tree and batteries. When we sat down to write a letter to Santa yesterday he came up with: "a box of red and blue toys, apples and candy." I keep thinking, what about a motorcycle, or ice skates, or books? Don't you want a kid camera? Dinosaurs? Paints and an eisel? Or on a more practical note, what about snowpants and wool socks and mittens? The truth is, this kid wants for nothing. He would be content running around the house naked every day and playing with his blocks and cars and the tupperware. Now the question is: how do we emphasize the spirit of GIVING at this time of year? What can we do to help his two year old soul understand that we need to look out for one another as human beings. Keeping in mind that this is the child who has trouble sharing anything with his playmates and gets defensive when the waitress takes way his dinner plate.
