"The Last Hurrah"... or "Five is a Charm"

We all made it through the first week of school. Thank God it was only three days long. Peter missed a lot of work and really pitched in to cover the absence of stayathomemama. On Wednesday he took the kids down to Plum Island to hang out with the Hipples and the Tim and Joanie for a night while I forged ahead on work. I joined them on Thursday after school. We spent a couple of sunny, breezy days at the beach, soaking up the final moments of summer, enjoying the calm before the storm. Jasper had two "sleep over parties" in Jackson and Tasha's room. In the morning after the second "party," Tasha emerged from the bedroom with a smile on her face, hands placed jauntily on her hips. "Jasper and I were kissing in bed," she declared with pride. Then she added, "On the LIPS!" Oh. At what point is a chaperon necessary?

Today Peter and I are celebrating our fifth wedding anniversary. Amazing to think it has been five years, and a good seven before that, since this adventure began. In five years we have started two careers, had two children (one of whom is now kissing on the lips), and bought a house... among other achievements. To help commemorate the occasion, Oma and Pop Pop came to babysit. We had planned to head for the mountains and backpack for 24 hours, but given Josie's recent state of insecurity we decided in the end not to stray too far from home. At the last minute we remembered a friend's offer to stay in their guest house. Conveniently they live about ten minutes from our house and have a stunning estate. We loaded the canoe on the car, packed our bags, and headed out for a romantic evening of paddling on Turtle Pond, dining at The Shaker Table in Canterbury, and taking advantage of a private room at "Anniversary Farm" (the name of our friend's estate, no kidding). It was an exceptional evening. The kids barely missed us. We returned home this morning to the family and home we are so proud of. Happy we decided to get hitched. Amazed that after five years we still feel homesick for the wedding.
