Hurricane Season

Two days before the arrival of Hurricane (or rather, Tropical Storm) Irene we took advantage of the long weekend to head once again to Bronson's cabin in West Virginia. It was our second time to this magical spot, this time with friends from Vermont who now live in Pittsburgh. We spent a long, lazy, sunny day on the Cheat River, paddling and stopping on every other sandy beach to skip rocks and swim. Jasper and his buddy Finn, also six years old, spent most of their time in the water, swimming along side the boats or pushing us past the rocks. Josie remained adamantly opposed to "white water," but braved the class 3 rapids and when all was said and done admitted that she "loves canoeing." We were sad to leave on Monday, as the rain arrived and winds picked up.

Irene left us with a small branch through our roof, but otherwise unscathed. The storm was enough to humble us, however. Peter and Bronson better get on that climate change issue... pronto.
