As we ease out of a long, luxurious weekend, I am taken by the overwhelming goodness of it all.
We spent the holiday in New York, staying with (and being totally spoiled by) the parents of Peter's brother's fiancee. My in-laws' in-laws. It was a flawless three days peppered with a traditional feast, first-class viewing of the Macy's parade, a stroll through Central Park and ride down 5th Avenue on the busiest shopping day of the year past dazzling store fronts. We had quality time with family, saw some good friends, missed all the traffic. Good times.
As we visited various friends and family and returned to the comfortable conversations of "what's new" and "how are things," I found myself answering: "Not much... Things are great." And there isn't, and they are. It is one of those momentous non-momentous moments when all is well and in balance. The kids aren't sick and they're fairly delightful. Parents are in good health. Jobs are stable and stimulating. Peter's home. I would like to exercise more, but that's alright. The country's in shambles and the world on its way to certain ruin, but we are fine. This makes for boring conversation... but leaves so much to be thankful for.
